So I made a motorcycle jacket! It's based off one I made a few years ago, but I didn't LOVE it. Everyone else did. I like my new one better. So does everyone else :D

Both blues replaced. I also corrected some mistakes I found in the process, eg I'd missed the yellow eyes on the first corner cat. The blues don't have quite enough contrast to suit me, but I think is now good enough to keep going!

Deja Vu? Or just read the book?

Have you ever seen a move where you would swear you hadn't read the book and then found you knew what would happen in the movie?  I was watching Bridge to Terabithia last night.  I don't have any memory of reading the book as a kid, but I must have.  The story was so familiar.

The not-so-great Gatsby

Maybe there's a reason why I never got around to reading some of the classics of American fictions. I have always been fascinated by Russian and German writers: Dostoevsky, Gogol, Thomas Mann, Herman Hesse. As a result I never read a lot of the American Classics. Maybe I'm missing something but I found "The Great Gatsby" to be really boring. I want to be as open minded as possible here but I can't understand why it is considered a classics.

Mystery SAL

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I realize we're all planning for the Stitching Olympics, but in case anyone wants to do a mystery SAL afterwards, I've received permission from Blackbird Designs to use one of their freebies for us.

It's small (92 by 75), but maybe it would be a welcome respite after we go nuts for the next few months.  I'm willing to organize and email.  Just keep it in mind for after the Olympics.

Welcome to the Jungle #1 by Jim Butcher, art by Ardian Syaf

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Welcome to the Jungle #1 by Jim Buther. Art by Ardian Syaf comic book/fantasy

Anyone that knows me knows of my somewhat obsession with all things Dresden Files. I am a part of the LJ community [info]dresden_files and I also started one for the Dresden Files Rpg [info]dresdenfilesrpg and it is going great. Between that and trying to get everyone I know to read the books, it takes up a bit of my time. :)

Anyways, I normally am not a big comic book person. That is shifting as I get older, but I am far from an expert on the subject. Saying that, this was something I was very excited about. You can tell a lot of a story with a comic book that maybe the author did not have time to do while writing the novel. So, I had very high expectations.

The artwork was done by Ardian Syaf and it was amazing. Other than the TV show, you have never really had the chance to visualize what the characters from the books look like (other than in your mind). So, it was interesting to see what the artists thought of both Harry and Karen Murphy. I really liked the images of both. There is one where he is standing with his staff, long coat flowing in the wind that was just cool. Here is some sample art from the game. It has Murphy in it. :)

I am assuming the story takes place prior to the books. The story is that someone was savagely murdered at the Lincoln Park Zoo and made to look like a Gorilla named Moe did the deed. Of course Muphy calls on Harry and he is brought in to investigate. His investigation does not hold well with some of staff, since they were close to the deceased and this leads Harry to speak to Dr. Reese about the attack. The doctor is not convinced at all that Moe had anything to do with the attack and after a few beers and a nasty flashback where his mentor had tried to kill him, he went to talk to Dr Reese's assistant Will.

Will turns about be a woman (short for Willamena) and before they can really talk much, they are attacked by a Lion that Harry realizes was boung by someone in an attempt to kill him. They escape the Lion, but as the comic ends, are surround by more more of them...

It was fun. The plot was nothing huge, but it is a comic after all, so you have to realize that will be the case. Harry is Harry. Smartass supreme and too brave for his own good.

My rating system

My rating.  Pushing the cusp of greatness.  Yes, I am biased, but I had a lot of fun reading this comic.  :)  Harry is a great character and the artwork was amazing.

Shawshank Redemption

I hope this question isn't too silly.  I was wondering if I am the only person on the planet who thought that Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption was painfully cheesy, formulaic, and dispassionate.  I'm not asking this to be ranty.  I'm genuinely curious because I constantly hear from everyone that it is brilliant and beautiful and moving and touching.  Many of the people who say these things have very sophisticated tastes in literature, and many of them are just as unimpressed with most of Stephen King's work as I am.

I'm trying to wrap my head around what they saw that I didn't.  It just seems a bit odd that a book so universally loved and respected seemed so awful to me.

WIP: Totoro Set of Three

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I've been using Heaven's Hellcat's pattern to create a smaller version of her two totoros. This way I can expand her blue totoro pattern for the largest of them. So far so good. Eventually I will be posting my adaptation to her pattern.

slump

Does anyone else go through slumps with movie watching? While there's no shortage of movies I'm interested in seeing, I'm short on funds for rentals and trips to the theatre right now, but I can always watch something through ON DEMAND, for which I always seem to have coupons. Every time I go look at their list, however, I can't ever see anything on it I really want to invest the time in, and they have at least a couple of Oscar winners which I still desperately need/want to see, including There Will Be Blood and Atonement.

I dunno - it's like I'm in a slump. The only movies I have had much interest in seeing are more "comfort movies" than anything else, and the On Demand library hasa different inventory than I in terms of older fare to watch watch endlessly. (Harry&the Hendersons, really? That's in enough demand you can actually get 4 bucks for it 20 years later? Scary.) And I just can't watch movies oncable anymore - cuttingfor commercials is bad enough, but the moronic need to censor for language kills me - it's basic goddamn cable! Theres no FCC! Run the fuckin' words, already!

I really want to stitch but I simply can't settle to anything at the moment. I'm flitting between projects, doing only a couple of stitches on each. Even tiny little one-night things aren't holding my interest! Anybody else had this? What did you do to get past it?
